2018 Championship Week Primer-Big West

The Big West is another conference that can be placed in the grey area between low-major and mid-major schools. The Big West more often than not produces 15 or 16 seeded teams, but sometimes, they place a higher seed that can spring an upset, such as #13 Hawaii's win over #4 California in 2016. This year, the conference champion UC Davis is straddling the line between the 14 and the 15 seed, which means an upset is not impossible, but extremely unlikely.

The top eight teams advanced to the Big West Tournament and will compete in three rounds. The semifinals will be reseeded so the lowest seeded team will play the highest seeded team. The entire tournament will take place at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California.

Quarterfinals-Thursday, March 8th
#8 UC Riverside vs. #1 UC Davis
#5 Long Beach State vs. #4 Cal State Fullerton
#7 Cal Poly vs. #2 UC Santa Barbara
#6 Hawaii vs. #3 UC Irvine

Semifinals-Friday, March 9th
#6 Hawaii vs. #1 UC Davis
#5 Long Beach State vs. #2 UC Santa Barbara

Final-Saturday, March 10th
UC Davis and UC Santa Barbara beat each other on the others' home court during the season. However, UC Davis has won five games in a row whereas Santa Barbara dropped several games going into this tournament. I think that UC Davis will make the NCAA Tournament will make the tournament for the second time in a row and should have a more respectable outing than last year's trip.

UC Santa Barbara 67, UC Davis 73
