2018 Championship Week Primer-American

Wichita State left the Missouri Valley and came to the American conference this year. The Shockers were expected to compete for the American regular season title in their first year in the league. However, with a one point loss on Sunday, Wichita State lost their chance to win the regular season title. That distinction instead went to the team that beat them: Cincinnati. The Bearcats, Shockers, and Houston are expected to represent this conference in the NCAA Tournament.

The tournament will feature all twelve teams playing in four rounds. The top four teams received a bye to the quarterfinals. The entire tournament will take place at the Amway Center in Orlando, Florida.

First Round-Thursday, March 8th
#9 SMU vs. #8 Connecticut
#12 South Florida vs. #5 Memphis
#10 Tulane vs. #7 Temple
#11 East Carolina vs. #6 Central Florida

Quarterfinals-Friday, March 9th
#8 Connecticut vs. #1 Cincinnati
#5 Memphis vs. #4 Tulsa
#10 Tulane vs. #2 Wichita State
#6 Central Florida vs. #3 Houston

Semifinals-Saturday, March 10th
#5 Memphis vs. #1 Cincinnati
#3 Houston vs. #2 Wichita State

Final-Sunday, March 11th
It is fitting that the American final is a rubber match between the two best teams in the league. They each won on the other's home floor, which would make the idea of who would win on a neutral court anyone's guess. If the Shockers can get their defense going, then they will win this game and the automatic bid to the tournament field announced later that day.

Wichita State 65, Cincinnati 61
